How Hindu months work
A Hindu lunar month is the span between two new moons (amanta) or two full moons (purnimanta). The month name comes from the Sun's sidereal rashi at the new moon, which is why an extra Adhika Maas appears roughly every 32–33 months when the Sun does not change rashi within a lunar month.
North India, Nepal, and most Hindi-belt panchangs follow purnimanta months, while Maharashtra, Gujarat, and South India follow amanta months. Festival dates are identical in both systems — only the month label for the Krishna paksha differs.
